PTI Senators protest against Shahbaz Gill’s health condition

Leader of Opposition Dr Shahzad Waseem raised the matter of Gill’s health.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate witnessed chaos on Friday morning PTI senators protested over the arrest of and health condition of Shahbaz Gill.

A session of the Upper House commenced under Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani. PTI Senator attended the session wearing black armbands to protest the treatment being meted out to Shahbaz Gill.

Leader of Opposition Dr Shahzad Waseem raised the matter of Gill’s health. PTI lawmakers started raising slogans against the federal government and stood up on their seats. The House witnessed a rumpus as both sides clashed with each other.

Dr Shehzad Waseem raised a point of objection on Shehbaz Gill’s health as PTI senators continued to protest. He said Shehbaz Gill is struggling with his breath from the hospital in the morning. He was Gill was taken to the court his oxygen mask was removed.

“Shahbaz Gill kept saying that he is not getting enough oxygen to breathe. The medical report is telling everything,” he protested. “He has chronic asthma. His respiratory tract has been constricted. His body is in pain due to violence. His health is alarming.”

“The entire Islamabad Police is in PIMS. They are desperate to get hold of Shahbaz Gill, subject him to inhuman torture yet again and extract false confessions,” the opposition leader deplored.

The opposition then staged a walkout from Senate in protest to the alleged torture on Gill by the Islamabad Police. The Senate session was prorogued for an indefinite period.

Earlier, State Minister for Law Shahadat Awan presented the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Bill 2022. The bill was referred to the relevant standing committee by Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani.

According to the statement of objects and reasons of this bill, it is the duty of the state to provide protection, either directly or by means of institutional mechanism, to its citizens against all kind of torture and right to fair trial.

The bill attracted strong criticism from the opposition after the alleged custodial torture of Shahbaz Gill. On Friday, Gill was presented before a court on a wheelchair and was asked to remove his oxygen mask, showing breathing difficulties.
